A Weighing Turntable for Inbound QC: One Station for Weight, Photos and Records

Most receiving docks do the same job twice. A pallet lands on a floor scale for the weight, then someone carries items to a photo bench for the record. A weighing turntable merges both steps. It spins the load, reads its weight, and keeps the camera angles identical. This piece sets out how one station does that, and where the honest limits sit.

Executive Summary

We look at inbound inspection as a single workflow rather than two separate ones. The UT500RUWTYL150Pro carries a load detection module and a hardware zero mark on a 500 mm platform. That pairing lets one operator capture weight, weight-linked notes, and a repeatable photo set in one handling. We cover the specifications, the command interface behind the scale reading, and the setup order that avoids rework. We also list what this class of machine skips, because a buyer who expects a networked appliance will not find one here. The numbers come from the product specification, not from a demonstration unit.

·One handling instead of two. Weighing and photography share a stop, so heavy goods move once.

·Real capacity. The step mode carries 150 kg and the continuous mode carries 272 kg on a 500 mm disc.

·A scale you can script. The CT command set returns the reading as text your own software can log.

·Repeatable angles. A physical zero mark gives every SKU the same start angle, every day.

·Honest edges. The hotspot runs point-to-point, the app serves Android only, and mains power drives the disc.

1. The Job: One Station, Two Records

A receiving clerk records two things for most inbound goods. First, does the weight match the paperwork? Second, what condition did the item arrive in? Teams usually answer these questions at two different benches. The pallet goes to a floor scale. Then someone lifts items onto a photo table, shoots them, and types notes later. Every extra handling adds time and risk.

Figure 1. An inbound weighing and photography station. One handling covers the weight check and the photo set.

A rotating platform with a scale inside changes the sequence. The operator centres the item once. The platform settles, the scale reports, and the camera takes the same set of angles every time. For heavy or awkward goods this matters more than raw speed. Moving a casting twice costs more than waiting ten seconds for a settled reading. The camera also stays in one place. That single detail removes the re-framing step that eats most of a photographer’s day.

2. Why Manual Scales Slow the Dock

Separate scales and benches create three queues. Goods wait for the scale. They wait again for the camera. Then someone reconciles the two records at a desk. Each queue hides a failure mode. A carton gets re-weighed to settle a dispute, so the item travels back across the floor. Photos sit unnamed on a card until someone matches them to a line item.

Figure 2. A weighing turntable with a 500 mm disc. The load never leaves the platform between the weight reading and the photograph.

Combining the steps removes two thirds of the movement. It also removes the reconciliation step, because weight and image come from the same moment in time. When a supplier disputes a short shipment, you hold both records for the same object.

3. Turning Requirements Into Specifications

Start with the largest item in your regular intake, not the average one. Measure its longest side. If that side exceeds the 500 mm disc, use the conversion rule below before you commit. Then check the duty. Step mode rotates in fixed angles and suits photography. Continuous mode rotates without stopping and suits display or steady inspection.

Load conversion when the item is wider than the disc: D1 × SL1 × 80% = D2 × SL2 for step mode, and D1 × CL1 × 80% = D2 × CL2 for continuous mode. D is the disc diameter or the longest side in centimetres, SL is the step load, CL is the continuous load. The official guidance also recommends working at 80% of the maximum load, because sustained heavy rotation wears the drive faster.

Speed matters more than most buyers expect. The UT500RUWTYL150Pro runs 32 to 92 seconds per full turn. A slow turn gives the platform time to settle at each stop, which helps both the scale reading and the photograph. A faster turn suits a visual check where nobody needs a still frame. Most receiving teams settle on a middle speed and leave it there. Stability beats speed here, because a blurred frame forces another rotation and another settling period.

4. Choosing Between the UT500 Variants

The UT500 family shares one chassis. Every variant is 500 mm across, 70 mm tall, carries 150 kg in step mode and 272 kg in continuous mode, and runs 32 to 92 seconds per turn. What changes is the feature letter set. Pick the letters your station actually needs, because you pay for features you never use.

Model Diameter Height Step load Continuous load Speed Wi-Fi Load detection Zero mark
UT500RUL150Pro 500 mm 70 mm 150 kg 272 kg 32–92 s/turn No No No
UT500RUWL150Pro 500 mm 70 mm 150 kg 272 kg 32–92 s/turn Yes No No
UT500RUWTYL150Pro 500 mm 70 mm 150 kg 272 kg 32–92 s/turn Yes Yes Yes

Read the model code rather than the marketing copy. The letter T marks load detection. The letter Y marks the hardware zero point. If either letter is missing from the model name, the machine does not have that feature. This is the fastest way to check a quote.

5. Building the Station

Set the station up in this order. Doing it in another order forces you to move heavy items again.

1.Put the platform on a level floor near a mains socket. The unit runs from a DC adapter and has no internal battery.

2.Centre the load on the disc. Keep the longest side inside 500 mm, or work out the reduced load first.

3.Connect the DC adapter and switch on. Add the USB cable only if you plan to drive the unit over the serial link.

4.Join the Wi-Fi hotspot that the turntable broadcasts. The SSID is the first sixteen characters of the model name, the default password is 88889999, and the address is 192.168.181.181:8181.

5.Open TurntableX on a Windows PC, or TurntablePlus on an Android handset, and set the step angle and the pause time.

6.Frame the camera once and leave it. The zero mark guarantees the start angle afterwards.

Figure 4. Wi-Fi control reaches the unit without a control cable across the floor. Power still comes from the mains.

Note what wireless solved here. It removed the control cable, not the power cable. The disc still draws mains power through the adapter, so plan the socket before you plan the network. Once the hotspot password is set, only trained staff should change it, because every control app needs it.

6. Writing the Weight Into the Record

The scale reports through the CT command set. Send CT+GETWEIGHTBYKG() and the unit answers in the form CurLoad(kg)=15.5kg. That plain string drops straight into a log line, a spreadsheet cell, or a message to your warehouse system. You can send it over the USB serial link or over the Wi-Fi command link.

The quoted accuracy of ±0.25 kg is a static detection figure. Read the value after the platform settles at a stop, not while it is mid-rotation. For a rotating inspection cell this means one pause per measurement, not a continuous stream.

Treat the reading as a production check rather than a certified trade result. It will catch a short shipment, a missing component, or a carton packed without its filler. It will not replace a certified instrument where law requires one. Most docks want the first job, not the second. Keep your time model honest about what the station saves and what people still do by hand.

7. Repeatable Angles With the Zero Mark

The letter Y adds a physical mark on the platform. The machine recognises that mark and uses it as a reference. The manual describes two jobs for it. First, angle calibration, which lets step mode land on the same position time after time. Second, motion tracking, which identifies the bearing of an object while it turns.

Figure 7. The hardware zero mark gives every rotation the same start reference. Comparison across batches becomes fair.

For photography this matters because your images become comparable. A scratch recorded at 90 degrees this week appears at 90 degrees next week. Auditors and suppliers can line the frames up side by side without guessing. That repeatability also helps machine vision later, because a detection model trained on one batch still frames the next batch the same way.

8. Where It Falls Short

Say these points out loud before anyone signs an order. Each one is a design choice, not a defect, but each one shapes how you plan the cell.

·The Wi-Fi link is a point-to-point hotspot. The unit broadcasts its own network and cannot join your LAN or reach the Internet. A PC that needs both must use two network interfaces.

·No camera trigger. The model code carries no S or PS, so nothing on the machine fires the shutter. Your capture software triggers the camera after the platform reaches the angle.

·The mobile app runs on Android only, and even there it is a demo build that supports some handsets. There is no iOS version today.

·Mains power only. There is no internal battery, and the USB cable carries commands rather than charge.

·Sustained heavy rotation shortens service life. Work at 80% of the rated load where you can.

FAQ

Can the turntable weigh objects while it spins?

Treat ±0.25 kg as a static accuracy figure. Pause the platform, let it settle, then read the value. A continuous reading taken mid-rotation will not hold the stated accuracy.

How do I pull the weight into my own software?

Send CT+GETWEIGHTBYKG() over the serial or Wi-Fi command link. The unit answers with a line such as CurLoad(kg)=15.5kg, which most logging tools can parse directly.

Does this model trigger the camera by itself?

No. UT500RUWTYL150Pro carries no S or PS in its model code, so it has no shutter output. Your own software fires the camera when the platform reports it has reached the step.

Can the unit join our warehouse Wi-Fi network?

No. It broadcasts a point-to-point hotspot of its own. There is no router mode, no LAN join, and no Internet path, so cloud dashboards cannot reach it directly.

Is there an iPhone app?

Not at present. The mobile app is an Android demo build that supports some handsets and some HarmonyOS builds. iPhone users cannot control the platform from a handset today.

What happens if the item is wider than the disc?

Work out the reduced load with the conversion rule in section 3, then keep inside it. As a worked example, a 40 cm disc rated at 100 kg in step mode supports a 60 cm load at about 53.3 kg.

Conclusion

A weighing turntable earns its place where goods are heavy, awkward, or disputed often. It removes one handling, joins two records to one object, and keeps photo angles comparable across months. The trade-offs are clear and stable: a point-to-point hotspot instead of a networked appliance, an Android-only app, mains power, and no built-in shutter trigger. If those fit your dock, the station pays for itself in avoided movement. If they do not, a plain inspection table plus a floor scale remains the honest answer.
